India: Peace in paradise

The quick pace of her life and endless working hours made manager Monika (34) yearn for escape, and to take some time for herself. She persuaded a friend to join her, and asked us to organise a three-week “get-away” programme for her. Her requirements? She makes plenty of decisions every day, so to get some rest, she needed a quiet hotel, seamless services, a few trips as a nice bonus and, most importantly, Ayurveda!

Kovalam, South Kerala, India. That was our final destination. Right there, set just back from a beautiful beach, is one of the most famous resorts specialising in Ayurveda – Niraamaya Retreats Surya Samudra. Within this exclusive hotel, a 13-day detox programme was prepared for Monika and her friend.

“The resort was generally very peaceful. We stayed in traditional Keralan huts, but they had the most luxury equipment! We could see the waves gently crashing right from our windows. I could finally relax and wasn’t even tempted to check my phone and think about how work was going without me,” laughs Monika, adding that she has fond memories of the meals served; she has never had lighter (vegetarian) dinners or tastier fruit in her life.

In addition to light and healthy meals, Ayurveda is inherently associated with yoga, which both friends practised every day. But it would be a pity to miss all the beauties of South India, so after all the procedures, we took both relaxed friends on a couple of unforgettable trips. They saw the glorious Padmanabhaswamy Temple in the capital city of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, spent one day watching elephants – both wild ones and those kept in a reserve –, and enjoyed a cruise through virgin coconut groves and mangrove forests.

“Naturally, I got back into work mode as soon as I got home, but I had three weeks just for myself, and nobody can take that away from me. The mindset of people in India and their pace of life are extremely different, and we were so lucky when it came to people – they were all so nice to us! It’s hard to describe. I would definitely recommend a similar trip to anyone who feels that their energy, inspiration and well-being are draining away,” Monika concludes.
