Italy: Ladies in pursuit of Prosecco

Several years ago, Daniela, Andrea, Pavla and Lucka established a nice tradition: they meet on the first Thursday of every month for a glass of properly chilled Prosecco. One January evening, Pavla was drinking her second or third glass when it occurred to her that they should go on a girls-only trip! But where? To Prosecco!

But how? Daniela was familiar with Umbrella Holiday and knew that we are able to turn even a one-word assignment into a great party! The wine-growing region famous for the production of Prosecco is not large: it stretches between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene in the north of Italy; it usually takes an hour to cross the region. But this wasn’t a “usual” trip, so we divided the region into several tasting days.

There’s no better place to start than Conegliano, the home of the first world's first wine-making school, Cerletti, established way back in 1876. The prosecco could only be enhanced by a short but brisk climb up to the local landmark, Castello di Conegliano, with its lovely bell tower and regional museum. The four friends were able to enjoy a glass, and perfect views, in the nearby restaurant, Al Castello. They also had their first chance to taste the regional speciality – Piave cheese!

The following four days involved a short transfer by car, admiring the surrounding landscape, discovering the beauty of picturesque towns, and tasting the sweet and tart, sparkling and classic wines that Prosecco has to offer. The four friends stayed in the gorgeous family hotel Relais d’Arfanta and explored some of the local family wineries every day, including Bonnotto delle Tezze and Col Vetoraz.

The most valuable bottles of Prosecco come from the small region of Cartizze, nestled in the steep hills near Valdobbiadene, and cultivated by 140 different wine growers. Our “fizz fanatics” could not miss such a gem! So they enjoyed one bottle right at the foot of the hill – in the pleasant Garbara winery. “That was exactly what we needed! But I still don't think that we managed to discuss and taste everything. So we’ll keep up the Thursday tradition,” smiled Daniela, after her return.
