Laos: A journey to recharge Radek’s batteries

Radek was not going through the easiest time in his life, which gave him the motivation to take a short trip abroad on his own. He has always been interested in Asia, so he asked us to organise a trip to Laos for him. We will assume the fact that this country is completely cut off from the sea is a coincidence... Our task was clear – provide Radek with a return flight ticket, accommodation and, most importantly, an interesting schedule which would recharge his batteries.

Radek managed to take 10 days off for his first solo trip. Even though the southern part of Laos has plenty to offer, for practical reasons and due to time constraints, we decided to focus on the northern part of this fabulous country, with its rich history. After arriving at the capital city Vientiane, Radek met a local guide. He gave him valuable advice, tips on trips, and helped Radek with arranging the transport between individual locations during his stay. On the same night, he showed Radek a market with local specialities where Radek could soak up the pleasant Laotian atmosphere.

When in Vientiane, one cannot miss the famous Pha That Luang Buddhist stupa or the Patuxai victory gate. The city of Vang Vieng surprised Radek with the beauty of its nature, its limestone rocks, caves and waterfalls. “Although I didn’t participate in the tourist tradition of going down the Song river on a tyre, it was amazing to take a dip in the blue lagoon right below the cave.” He also learned about the dreadful history of the bombed Phonsavan area and visited the mysterious Plain of Jars.

Luang Prabang, the city full of fascinating temples and museums, was our adventurer’s final destination before he took his flight back home. Before leaving, Radek managed to admire the breathtaking Kuang Si waterfalls and savour street food from local markets, the aspect he said he would miss the most. “Sailing on the Mekong, admiring impressive Buddhist temples, visiting traditional villages.... I had a marvellous holiday! In this country, I met a lot of interesting people, enjoyed delicious Laotian cuisine, and realised how little one needs to be happy!”
