Our article Adventure in the wilderness? Go snowmobiling in arctic Sweden!generated a lot of interest, and many readers wanted to know more. Therefore, we have more details of a sample 4-day tour across Lapland. What will you experience?

1st day: A night in the ice kingdom

The adventure starts right at Kiruna Airport, where your guides meet you at the baggage claim area. After having dressed in warm winter clothing (your size prepared) right at the airport, you sit down in the wooden sledges. While your guides tuck you in reindeer hides where you will be warm and comfortable, the huskies are happily jumping and barking, eager to get going. The ride will take you 22 km through the forests, across the frozen lakes and along the frozen river to the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi. The roaring silence is interrupted only by the creaking of the snow under the sledge, the dogs barking and the driver’s commanding the dogs where to go.

The famous Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi is the first original Icehotel in the world. It is built of frozen snow and ice, and each of the many hotel rooms is decorated by a different artist from around the world. You will see ice lamps, ice furniture, breathtaking sculptures and amazing architecture. The good news is that the snow beds are covered by matrasses and reindeer hides. The indoor temperature in the hotel is a stable – 5 °C.

The Lobby bar is made of ice and you here will enjoy a tasteful welcome drink. Guess what your glass is made of....? After checking in to the Icehotel (or the tasteful wooden cottages with modern amenities right next to it) it is time to go for a wood-fired sauna. A light snack on reindeer meat, salmon, trout, bear and other local specialties is accompanied by beer, wine and local shots. Thereafter you will enjoy a gourmet dinner in the tastefully decorated Icehotel restaurant (wooden building).

2nd day: Ice fishing and BBQ in the snow

After breakfast you will be assigned your snowmobile, and after receiving safety and driving instructions, your 180 km run for the day starts. Driving through the forests, over deep frozen rivers and lakes (including one of the largest lakes in Sweden; Torneträsk) we arrive at the highest located hotel in Sweden, Låktatjokko Fjällstation. During the day, we will make stops to ice fishing or setting up a BBQ in the snow.

The cozy hotel Låktatjokko Fjällstation is located at 1228 m above sea level and has a capacity of merely 18 guests. The local team of 4 people takes care of the guest needs, and will welcome you with waffles, cloudberry jam and whipped cream. After the traditional sauna and rolling in the snow (voluntary), you will be invited to the gourmet dinner with local specialties accompanied by beer and wine. The evening is rounded off with drinks and storytelling in the rustic lounge.

3rd day: Ride along the King’s Trail

New day, new sights! This day includes about 140 km in pure mountain terrain, along the famous King’s Trail, close to Kebnekaise, the highest mountain in Sweden. The tour offers incredible sights, peaks and valleys, small huts for resting and unlimited snow plains. You will most likely also meet reindeer in the wild, kept by the Laplanders. Along the route we will cook over open fire either in a hut, or dug deep into the snow.

Arriving in Nikkaluokta, a Sami village, you will be received by the local Sami family running the modern facility consisting of comfortable cabins and wood-clad restaurant. Time and energy permitting, we make a local tour on snowmobiles and perhaps do some ice fishing? Coming back, the traditional sauna and beer awaits, followed by dinner cooked by our Sami hosts.

4th day: Return to Kiruna

We return to Kiruna, again driving our snowmobiles on trails across lakes, through villages and circumventing Kiruna, once the largest city in the world (by area). We drive practically up to the airplane, leaving the snowmobiles and clothing at the airport. After a well-deserved lunch, we board and fly home, full of new impressions and experiences.
